It's been a while...

It's been awhile since I last update my blog. All my bettas were gone. In exchange, my lovely daughter came into this world on 5th of December 2010. As of today, she's 2 years and 4 days old.

As for myself, I'd been posted to Bintulu, Sarawak for my latest project. This is a great challenge for me as this is my first time working out of Singapore.

Nevertheless, I'm picking up a new hobby. As of today 8am, my new hobby has started, "GOLF". Currently training under Mr. Samy's guidance at Kelab Golf Bintulu.

New Batch of Bettas from Thailand

Just received my latest batch of bettas from Thailand. Here are the pictures directly from breeder.

Black Dragon HMPK

Green Mask Dragon Geno HMPK

Orange HMPK

Super Red HMPK

Yellow Dragon HMPK

And last but not least, the matching females for the above males.

Spawning plan will be in place once these fishes are being accustomed to the water condition here. So far this batch doesn't show much stress sign even though they were in the small plastic bag for almost 5 days.

Arrival of My Racks

Finally my betta racks has arrived!!! A 4 tier 6' H x 4' L x 2' W for growing up tanks and jarring area, and a 4 tier 6' H x 4' L x 1.5' W for display and spawning. Containers will only arrived on next Sunday, 25th April 2010, though. Bought 160 SU830 containers!!! I'm finally all geared up!

Planned spawns for the new rack will be as follow:-
1. Orange Dragon pair
2. Red Dragon pair (male has slight bend on ventral, hope it doesn't carry the gene to the offsprings)

Currently need to hunt for other breeders namely:-
1. Black Dragon pair
2. Yellow Dragon pair
3. Blue mask with DT geno pair
4. Super black pair

Can't let all the space being left unused. Today after work, I'll setup the racks. Finally my fishes have a dedicated corner for themselves instead of being scattered around the house.

Once setup, I'll post some pictures here. Till then...

Update on my 37 days old fries (Royal Blue Full Mask HMPK Spawn)

This is an update on my Royal Blue Full Mask HMPK (M) x Turquoise Mask (F) HMPK Spawn. Currently at 37 days old. In general, most of the fries looks like this. Hopefully the finnages turn out well because as for colour wise, red can be seen in most of the turquoise fries. Won't be expecting D caudal as well because the ray at both ends of the caudal are short.

Update On My Royal Blue Full Mask HMPK Spawn

A little update of my Royal Blue Full Mask HMPK Spawn. Currently their 36 days old. Biggest of them is at 2cm and the average size is 1.5cm. Guess they're a bit slow in growing but I'm still happy with it because still got about 100+ of them surviving. Colours are showing and its about 50% Royal Blue and 50% Turquoise. Reason being female is a Turquoise Mask HMPK and male is the Royal Blue Full Mask HMPK. Based on Punnet Square:

Genetics for Royal Blue and Turqoise:-
Royal Blue = Blbl
Turquoise = BlBl

The Punnet Square result is indeed accurate. At least, this confirmed that the parents came from a clean line. However, red wash needs to be monitor as I noticed that the female has signs of red wash and recently, red wash developed on the male's ventral fin.
Most of them are having coloured lips, RB with blue lips and turqoise with green lips. Masking is not yet very visible but some have already develop masking on the face.

The difference in sizes of the fries surprised me the most. The biggest is at 2cm, however, the smallest is only 5mm!

Will try to upload some picture of the fries tonight.

Arrival of My Platinum Orange Dragon HMPK Pair

Finally my Platinum Orange Dragon HMPK Pair arrived on 30th March 2010 and collected only on 2nd April 2010.  Female immediately became active, however, the male was quite stressed. Male was not moving much. Luckily by 3rd April 2010, the male build bubblenest and did a little bit of flaring. Will continue to monitor the male so that he will be ready for breeding in a week or two's time.

Picture will be updated later once I get my glass tank. Currently housing them in the SGD2.00 IKEA container.

March 27th Earth Hour 2010 20:30 to 21:30 (GMT+8:00)

This year's Earth Hour falls on the 27th of March 2010 from 20:30 to 21:30 (GMT+8:00). I personally think that this is a great effort put in by WWF.

People may think that it might not be significant with that 1 hour a year lights off thing but hey, imagine this, 121 countries and territories participated this year. That's hundreds of millions of households and businesses unified to stop 1 hour of energy usage. Its just like if 1 person contributes $1, it is only a total of $1 on the table. However, if 1,000,000 people take part and contributes $1 each, that will be a total of $1,000,000 on the table. Now is this significant or not?

As for my family, we will also pledge our support to Earth Hour by switching off all power (except my fridge).

For more information, please go to the official webpage of Earth Hour at http://www.earthhour.org/
